Mental health and suicide prevention initiatives
In July 2019, Ms Christine Morgan was appointed as the National Suicide Prevention Adviser. Ms Morgan reports directly to the Prime Minister on this work. Ms Morgan is working to take a whole-of-government approach to suicide prevention activities to work towards zero deaths by suicide.
The National Mental Health Commission monitors and reports on mental health and suicide prevention initiatives and provides advice to government to inform improvements to Australia’s mental health and suicide prevention systems.
The Fifth National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan provides a framework to guide coordinated Australian governments’ efforts in mental health reform and service delivery, including suicide prevention.
In May 2020 Dr Ruth Vine was appointed as the new Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Mental Health within the Chief Medical Officer’s team at the Australian Department of Health.
The Veteran Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy and National Action Plan 2020-2023 aims to improve the mental health and wellbeing, and reduce the risk of suicide among veterans and their families.
The Defence Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2018-2023 sets out Defence’s approach to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of current ADF members and their families through all phases of their careers and life.
National Strategic Framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ Mental Health and Social and Emotional Wellbeing 2017-2023
The National Strategic Framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ Mental Health and Social and Emotional Wellbeing 2017 2023 is intended to guide and inform Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health and wellbeing reforms. It is designed to complement the Fifth National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan.
